Safe Water in Ecuador

Bill Farrar and I traveled together in February 2025 to install a purifier system near Santo Domingo, Ecuador as well as investigate future water projects in the highlands of the country. The trip was initiated by a request from Timmy Global Health and their local partner in Ecuador, Hombro y Hombro (Shoulder to Shoulder) for Fountains of Hope to provide safe water solutions to areas where they have identified need.

We arrived in the capital city of Quito, a beautiful, historic city with a base elevation of 9000 ft. being on the equator, they don’t experience change of seasons besides a wet season and dry season and the temperatures remain fairly constant. We met up with Pablo and Carlos from Hombro y Hombro and Carlos joined us as our assistant and guide through the trip. From Quito, we drove a couple hours through winding switchback roads to santo coming where we installed a water purifier system at a school belonging to the Tsachila indigenous community in that area. The principal and teachers belonged to that community and were very dedicated to understanding and operating the system for the benefit of their children.

After the installation in Santo Domingo, we were able to fly to the Galapagos Islands to visit their local hospitals to investigate a medical mission as well as enjoy the natural wonders of that unique area.

Upon return to Quito, we were caught up in the middle of the Carnival celebration, full of foam spray and parades. After surviving the revelry, we set off to the highlands where we were able to seek out future fountains of hope water projects. The people that we worked with and met were very gracious and appreciative of the opportunity to work with us to combat water borne diseases in their communities. As we have learned around the world, having a dedicated and well-educated partner provides better assurance of long-term success of installations. Ecuador is a worthy destination for Fountains of Hope to continue the mission of supply safe water solutions.
